Water Water
We praise God that our well is finally operational! Now, with a secure water supply, we have new possibilities for further development that didn’t exist before. Water in Haiti is a priceless commodity—often the source of great heartache when contaminated or not properly managed. It is our prayer that this small hole in the ground becomes a source of great blessing to many. Although we delight in sharing this news, Jesus puts our earthly excitement into Heavenly perspective in his response to the woman at the well in John 4:13 saying, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Residential Development Residential Development
The Paulos Group is building and field-testing a variety of residential models. These units are engineered to reasonably withstand earthquakes and hurricanes as well as be energy efficient and utilize passive cooling designs and technologies. The houses will include electricity, water and sewage. We are working to determine the threshold of affordability that includes everything listed above while at the same time staying within reach of any family earning consistent income (we are also working on several initiatives to help those not earning income). Buyers will be able to purchase homes through a monthly repayment plan and a homeowners association will determine community standards. Paulos Group personnel will live in this community to help diversify and strengthen the scope of the development and its long-term successfulness.

Economic Development Economic Development
We have invested tens of thousands of dollars directly and indirectly in sustainable economic development. We don’t consider employing people to work for the Paulos Group “sustainable” nor do we consider it “economic development”—so we don’t. One initiative that has emerged is a herding cooperative. We have applied direct investment to a co-op of over 150 goats—plus, those in the co-op also own chickens, cattle and hogs. Through consolidation we’ve helped families shift from subsistence to specialization, empowering them to earn more income while at the same time opening doors to further economic opportunities for more people.

Finish carpentry on prototype house #2 utilizing insulated exterior walls and insulated roofing. Our hope, as we field test this design/model, is to maximize passive cooling and ventilation in a high heat--high humidity environment, consuming little or no electricity.

Sewer Sewer
One of two waste management systems we are developing—multiple houses will be connected to a septic system utilizing traditional leech pit technology. In time, wastewater will be aerated and reused in irrigation. These systems are designed for easy maintenance, ensuring long-term sanitation needs.

Prototype House #2 Prototype House #2
With help from Lyndon Clark and Reward Walls, we are integrating building materials best suited for the harsh climate in Haiti (heat, humidity, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc). We’re attempting to strike a balance between what’s ideal and appropriate and what’s cost effective and affordable—adding value to our community.

Electric Electric
In much of Haiti, “Électricité d’Haïti” provides electricity less than 20% of the time. Total blackouts can even last months. The few who can afford generators spend a small fortune fueling their personal electric needs. You can only imagine how this hinders economic growth. The Paulos Group is working toward sustainable electricity by harnessing the power of the sun and the wind.
